Infrared Sauna Use May Be Beneficial for Detoxification
A case study following firefighters exposed to harmful chemicals reveals that infrared sauna usage may provide detoxification benefits for bodies.
What Is Detoxification?
Detoxification is a cleansing process. It clears the human body of toxic substances which accumulate due to outside factors like environmental pollution, drugs and diets or through internal factors like cholesterol, fats and free radicals. Detoxification also clears such toxins by transforming or neutralizing congestions and mucus within body.

What are Toxins?
Toxins are any harmful compounds within the human body affecting the function and structure of body cells. Toxins vary widely and could be medicinal residues, tobacco, alcohol; metallic presence of lead, nickel, mercury and aluminum; industrial compounds like pesticides and herbicides; or microbial compounds like yeast and bacteria. These toxins can cause respiration problems, improper and insufficient digestion, colon dysfunction and deficient liver function which can lead to poor excretion through the kidneys. Consequently, the body’s toxicity increases.

Why is Detoxification necessary?
The main goal behind detoxification is to clean the body of toxins and improve general health and well-being. Benefits of Detoxification are:

  • Proper digestion of food leading to better elimination of waste materials
  • Improved blood circulation
  • Improved immune system leading to greater resistance to illness and infections
  • Better functioning of nervous and endocrine systems
  • Healthier skin and improved physical appearance
  • Increase in energy levels, and
  • Overall sense of well-being

What is Infrared Sauna?
Infrared Sauna or rather Far Infrared Sauna is a technical system of using infrared rays to heat body temperatures to 110-130 degrees Fahrenheit. This eliminates toxins through the process of sweating. Infrared rays can penetrate through your skin to approximately 1 inch to 1½ inches and causing your body sweat due to high temperatures.

How Should You Use Infrared Sauna for Detoxification?
The following suggestions may provide Infrared Sauna users with optimal results:

  • Have two glasses of mineralized water or juice with mineral before entering the sauna.
  • Infrared rays cannot penetrate through clothing, enter the sauna in minimal clothing or in undergarments with a head drape. Male genital organs should not receive direct infrared rays.
  • Place the sauna in a well ventilated room so toxins in the air are able to be eliminated.
  • Limit your sauna session to half an hour. Allow a cool down period which could include a cool shower without soap and a ten minute lie down before reentering for another session. The rest period is for the elimination of dead cells and other toxins. It is advised to regulate bowel movements thoroughly.
  • Do not work or talk in sauna, just meditate. Use backless stools or chairs for sitting in sauna.
  • Change directions if using bulb saunas. Do not touch hot bulbs, do not pour water or put towels near on or near the hot and working bulbs.
  • After completing a sauna session, take a shower and brush all over the whole body, face and hair to remove any toxins and open the pores. Avoid shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and creams to reap full the benefits of the Infrared Sauna.

Complement Infrared Sauna with other beneficial habits. Take in natural foods from mineral-rich soil, use extra sea salt to replace minerals lost during sweating, exercise regularly, breathe fresh and clean air,  avoid exposure to toxic chemicals, maintain a positive and optimistic outlook and stay happy. These increase detoxification benefits of Infrared sauna.

Who should avoid Infrared Sauna?
Infrared Sauna could be detrimental to:

  • Persons with adrenal suppression and multiple sclerosis
  • Persons with recent and acute injuries to joints
  • Pregnant women
  • Persons with surgical implants like metal rods, artificial joints and silicone implants
  • Women during menstrual cycle
  • Hemophiliacs or hemorrhage prone persons

Discontinue infrared sauna use if you experience any discomfort.

Case Study
Firefighters exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls and its by-products underwent neurophysiologic and neuropsychological tests six months after fire. Thereafter underwent two to three weeks of detoxification programs with proper exercise, sauna and restricted diet. There were significant improvements in their memory levels, fatigue, energy and vigor. This highlights beneficial detoxifying effects of Infrared Sauna.
