Infrared Sauna Use Beneficial for Arthritis
Regular use of infrared sauna therapy can provide soothing relief and health benefits for sufferers of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis and other joint disorders.
Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis begins at a young age and is due to body’s immune system attacking body organs. This autoimmune disease causes joint pains, stiffness, swelling of joints and damages muscles and tendons leading to loss of functioning of the joints. It occurs symmetrically as it affects both knees and both hands simultaneously. Common occurrences are wrist and finger joints. Rheumatoid arthritis patients suffer from fever, tiredness, and feel unwell constantly.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is due to wear and tear of muscles and is more rampant in the elderly, particularly women. This leads to continuous deterioration of muscles and joints leading to further complications. Ends of bones have a fatty connective tissue at the joints. This supports and protects bones from injuries. Over a period, this connective tissue loses much of its elasticity and wears out. Bones no longer have any cushion to support their movements. This causes pain at joints and restricts free movement of joints. It is common in joints of hands, knees, and hips. Obesity also plays an important role in osteoarthritis.

Effect of Infrared Sauna on Arthritis

Infrared sauna therapy uses infrared rays or radiant heat to cure arthritis or joint pains. Infrared Sauna has a therapeutic effect on sprains and various musculoskeletal ailments. It is therefore common practice for doctors and medical practitioners to use infrared heat to cure arthritic patients. Infrared rays induce high temperatures within body for effective cure such as:

  • Reduces muscular spasms - Radiant heat of infrared rays on spindle cells and Golgi tendon organs helps in reducing joints pain and skeletal organs. This also lowers muscular spasms.
  • Acts as painkiller - Infrared heat reduces sensation of pain in joints as it directly acts on nerve-endings of tissues and other smaller nerves. Heat increases production of endorphin in cells, which offers immense relief from pain.
  • Increases elasticity of collagen tissues: Infrared rays produce around 45°C temperatures within body. Such high temperatures heat up tissues and allow stretching of tissues of around 0.5~0.9%. Such stretching with range-of-motion exercises improves working of joints, ligaments and tendons. Many stretching sessions with infrared sauna yields excellent results for arthritic pain.
  • Takes away toxins - Infrared rays induce more blood circulation in the body by expanding the blood vessels. The increased blood flow and circulation carries off waste materials and toxins from joints and supplies rich oxygenated blood to these joints and muscles. This improves joint movements and heals joints reducing arthritic pain. It also fights away chronic infections due to toxic materials in body.
  • Reduces stiffness of joints - Radiant heat warms up tissues, which relaxes muscles. This increases flexibility and relieves aches, stiffness and soreness of joints arising due to old age. Tendons and ligaments relax and infrared heat produces many healing effects on the joints.

Case Studies

  • A 14-year old Swedish girl was suffering from rheumatic arthritis of knees since the age of eight. Her condition was deteriorating slowly. However, just three sessions of infrared sauna brought about a complete change in her condition. She was soon doing folk dances.
  • Whole-body infrared therapy was successful in curing all Rheumatoid Arthritis patients in a clinical trial in Japan.
  • A 70-year old Swedish man was down with Rheumatoid Arthritis with acute rheumatic fever. Despite various injections and other treatments for arthritis, his Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate was static at 125. Five months of infrared treatment brought Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate down to just 11.
